“Eventually the wheels will fall off the bus, and I’m like, well, mine aren’t falling off anytime soon,” says Julie Gibson Clark, who ranks no.2 in a global longevity competition.
Julie Gibson Clark is aging at 0.665 of a year for every chronological year she lives. So while the Phoenix-based single mother is 55 years old, her “biological” age, which may determine healthspan and lifespan more accurately, is decreasing—that is, according to her latest epigenetic DNA test, evaluating how her lifestyle influences her genes.
Amid the craze to live forever—a $26 billion business predicted to nearly double in the next decade—Clark’s results are more than impressive. In a global online longevity game called the Rejuvenation Olympics, ranking 4,000 people’s pace of aging averages across six months, Clark is in second place. She ranks higher than no.6 Bryan Johnson, the wealthy tech founder who spends $2 million per year on reverse aging, and no. 19 Peter Diamandis, whose venture fund has put $500 million into growing technologies, many of which are aimed at research and development for healthy aging and extending lifespan, according to his website.
Unlike the tech millionaires using extreme anti-aging protocols like spending up to $1,000 an hour to see a rejuvenation doctor, Clark’s secret is somewhat ordinary. After all, she makes less than six figures a year and cannot afford to spend her savings trying to live forever since she will need enough to sustain her into extreme old age. She spends $27 a month on a gym membership and $79 a month on a supplement subscription from NOVOS, the company whose trial she entered and worked with to submit her results to the longevity leaderboard.

So what’s her daily routine? Turns out, you can do it, too. “This stuff has to just kind of be like brushing your teeth,” Clark says.
A vegetable-rich diet
Clark typically consumes about 16 ounces of vegetables daily, snacking on carrots, radishes, and peppers during the workday. The majority, though, she gets through salads and soups. Eating a diverse array of whole foods, such as a range of vegetables, is associated with a strong gut, which can boost the immune system and keep the body healthy.
Clark also limits the amount of refined sugars and grains she eats, which contain fewer nutrients than complex carbohydrates.

Strength and cardio
When Clark heads to the gym, she does a mix of cardio and strength workouts each week: Two days of upper body workouts with weights, two days of lower body with weights, and one day of strength-training targeting her midsection. She also does about 20 to 30 minutes of cardio four times a week.
On the weekends, Clark hikes, kayaks, plays pickleball, or takes a long walk.
Especially as people age, incorporating strength training into the week can help combat age-related muscle loss. Finding an exercise you enjoy can help you stick with it.
A sauna and a cold shower
At least three times a week, Clark uses the sauna for 20 minutes before taking a cold shower.
Longevity experts swear by cold and hot immersion to stress the body. As longevity expert Dr. Mark Hyman previously told Fortune, “a stress that doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”
Heat immersion like a sauna can activate longevity pathways, he says. “You’ll end up increasing heat shock proteins which clean up all damaged proteins and boost your immune system and increase your cardiovascular health,” Hyman says.
A cold shower, similar to the cold plunge, can do more than improve alertness. It can release adrenaline and keep the body resilient—a biological process known as hormesis, which can reduce inflammation.
An incentive to keep going
Clark doesn’t see her health journey as intense, nor does she prescribe to the term “biohacker.” She has found easy ways to prioritize her health through diet, exercise, and healthy bouts of stress.
She also credits her motivating factor to keeping up her routine to live a long, healthy life: Her son.
As a single mother, she hopes to stay around for her 17-year-old son as long as possible. “I want to be there for him as long as possible,” she told Fortune. “I want to minimize any negative repercussions of aging.”

Let’s unravel these hallmarks of aging, and how they determine the trajectory of our healthspans:
01 - Genomic instability
Blame it on internal and external stressors such as tobacco, environmental pollution, UV rays, and free radicals, all of which our DNA is constantly battling. Over time, this makes DNA less stable. While the good news is that our own repair mechanisms within our bodies can fix DNA, these mechanisms aren’t always able to repair it fully. Damaged DNA can lead to mutations during the creation of new cells. When multiple mutations or damage to multiple genes occurs, one of the many negative outcomes is the potential for cancerous cells to grow [1].
Is there a way to prevent genomic instability? While more research is needed, one study found that iron intake — more specifically, taking around 15mg of iron per day — was associated with an increase in genomic stability [2].
02 - Telomere attrition
Over your lifetime, which includes an estimated 10 quadrillion cellular divisions [3], small fragments of DNA separate with each division. As a result, chromosomes shorten progressively. Telomeres, small cap-like structures made of DNA and protein, protect the ends of these vital chromosomes. However, over time, these telomeres experience a level of degradation that contributes to age-related health decline.

03 - Epigenetic alterations
Changes in DNA modifications due to environment or lifestyle can accelerate aging by turning certain genes on or off [6]. Why might this be a concern? 04 - Loss of proteostasis
Our bodies also become less efficient at breaking down and removing damaged proteins. When loss of proteostasis (aka protein homeostasis) occurs, misfolded or damaged proteins accumulate, increasing your risk for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease [8].
Intriguingly, some organisms display an extraordinary resistance to protein damage, including the tardigrade or "water bear," which can withstand extreme conditions like dehydration, radiation, and high pressure. By studying these unique organisms, scientists hope to uncover potential strategies for maintaining or restoring proteostasis in human health [9]. Additionally, avoiding caloric excess and even higher-protein diets coupled with resistance exercise have been associated with improved proteostasis mechanisms [10, 11], highlighting the role of lifestyle choices in the preservation of protein homeostasis.
05 - Deregulated nutrient-sensing
A notable aspect of the aging process is the decline in the efficiency of cellular mechanisms reacting to nutrient availability. This phenomenon, known as deregulated nutrient-sensing, plays a crucial role in maintaining growth, metabolism, and cell survival. The dysfunction arises from factors such as genetic mutations, epigenetic changes, and oxidative stress.
Nutrient sensing proteins, which include insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), mTOR, AMPK, and sirtuins, become dysregulated and contribute to age-related diseases and reduced lifespan in animal models. Intermittent fasting and compounds like resveratrol (one of the ingredients in our daily longevity supplement, Vitality) may enhance the efficiency of these pathways to improve cellular function [12, 13].
06 - Mitochondrial dysfunction
Mitochondria, often referred to as the "powerhouses of the cell," play a vital role in generating energy and maintaining healthy cellular metabolism. Over time, these organelles can become less efficient and accumulate damage, which can lead to a decline in energy production and increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), causing further cellular damage.
Various factors like environmental stress, mutations in mitochondrial DNA, and impairment in mitochondrial quality control systems contribute to this dysfunction. Exercise, managing stress, getting quality sleep, and supplementation with vitamin D and urolithin A (an ingredient in our cellular booster, Amplify) have been shown to support mitochondrial function [14, 15, 16, 17, 18].
07 - Cellular senescence
Cells eventually reach a point where they stop dividing, a phase brought about by oxidative stress, DNA damage, inflammation and other triggers. Senescent or “zombie” cells lead to a gradual decline in cellular function, accelerating aging and age-related diseases.
Senescent cells often exhibit increased secretion of inflammatory cytokines, growth factors, and proteases, a condition termed the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). This state promotes inflammation and can accelerate the aging process. Regular exercise has been shown to help clear out senescent cells [19]. Fisetin and quercetin (both found in Vitality) are senolytic compounds that remove senescent cells [20, 21, 22].
08 - Stem cell exhaustion
Our bodies are replete with stem cells, remarkable entities capable of both self-renewal and differentiation into various cell types. Their critical role is to repair and replace worn-out or damaged tissues. Over time, due to environmental stressors, disease, or natural aging, the regenerative capacity of these stem cells diminishes (referred to as stem cell exhaustion).
Research is ongoing to find ways to combat stem cell exhaustion. Lifestyle modifications, such as intermittent fasting, regular exercise, and far-infrared sauna use, have been shown to support stem cell function and survival [23, 24, 25].
09 - Altered intercellular communication
Aging affects cell-to-cell communication, which is integral to overall well-being and healthy immunity. This impaired communication prevents cells from responding effectively to external stimuli, impacting tissue and organ function and overall health. These alterations can also prompt inflammation, weaken immunity, and contribute to age-related diseases.
Researchers are currently exploring medical and therapeutic interventions to strengthen cellular connections and promote healthier aging. One such approach would involve identifying and increasing the amount of pro-longevity factors circulating in blood [26].
10 - Chronic inflammation
Also referred to as “inflammaging,” chronic inflammation is a persistent state of immune activity that can lead to tissue damage and poor health. Chronic inflammation is thought to be a driver of age-related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and cancer [27], and can be caused by several factors such as stress, poor diet, smoking, and a sedentary lifestyle [28].
Adopting healthier habits is key to combating chronic inflammation: Consume a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; engage in regular exercise; manage stress through yoga or other relaxation techniques; and ensure that you’re getting adequate sleep [29, 30, 31, 32].
11 - Disabled macroautophagy
Our bodies have their own cellular self-cleaning process known as autophagy that removes the buildup of waste and damaged cellular parts. A disruption in this process can lead to a buildup of dysfunctional cell parts, which can drive metabolic and neurological diseases, as well as cancer.
Lifestyle changes such as intermittent fasting and exercise are excellent inducers of autophagy [33, 34]. Compounds such as spermidine (found in Vitality), have been shown to induce autophagy [35]. Urolithin A (a compound found in our cellular booster, Amplify) also stimulates mitophagy (the cellular cleanup of old and damaged mitochondria) [36].
12 - Dysbiosis
Our gut microbiome has a symbiotic relationship with us, and healthy gut bacteria protect against infections, help us properly absorb nutrients, and also maintain our intestinal lining. Factors such as poor diet (including lack of fiber), excessive antibiotic use, and our environment can provoke this imbalance, leading to a shift in the ratios of beneficial and harmful bacteria [37]. This increases your risk for chronic inflammation, infection, and age-related diseases.
A high-fiber, nutrient-dense diet that avoids the common “Western diet” foods (e.g. corn syrup; sugar; refined flour ) can help support a balanced microbial community, as can taking prebiotics and probiotics [38, 39, 40].
